In general, makeup artists apply makeup to performers to reflect period, setting, and situation of their role.

Makeup artists furnish performers with makeup removal assistance after performances have been completed. They also study production data, such as character descriptions and situations in order to establish makeup requirements. Equally important, makeup artists have to alter or maintain makeup during productions as needed to compensate for lighting changes or to produce continuity of effect. They are often called upon to evaluate environmental characteristics such as venue size and lighting plans in order to establish makeup requirements. They are expected to examine sketches and plaster models so as to obtain desired character image depictions. Finally, makeup artists develop character drawings or models, based upon independent research, so as to augment period production files.

Every day, makeup artists are expected to be able to distinguish between colors. They need to articulate ideas and problems. It is also important that they see details at a very fine level of focus.

It is important for makeup artists to cleanse and tone the skin in order to ready it for makeup application. They are often called upon to layout rubber or plastic prostheses that can be used to change performers' appearances. They also demonstrate products to patrons, and furnish instruction in makeup application. They are sometimes expected to advise hairdressers on the hairstyles required for character parts. Somewhat less frequently, makeup artists are also expected to cleanse and tone the skin in order to ready it for makeup application.

Makeup artists sometimes are asked to establish budgets, and work within budgetary limits. They also have to be able to requisition or acquire needed materials for special effects and special cosmetics And finally, they sometimes have to evaluate environmental characteristics such as venue size and lighting plans in order to establish makeup requirements.
