In general, transportation attendants provide services to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers aboard ships, buses, or within the station or terminal. They also perform duties, such as greeting passengers, explaining the use of safety equipment, serving meals or beverages, or answering questions related to travel.

Every day, transportation attendants are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to speak clearly.

It is important for transportation attendants to inspect kitchens and dining areas to insure adherence to sanitation requirements. They are often called upon to open and close doors for customers. They also furnish boarding assistance to elderly or injured people. They are sometimes expected to explain and demonstrate safety procedures and safety equipment use. Somewhat less frequently, transportation attendants are also expected to clean rooms and bathroom facilities, change linens, and replenish supplies in washrooms.
