Sales managers formulate and direct staffing, training, and performance evaluations to evolve and control sales and service programs. They also decide on price schedules and discount rates. Equally important, sales managers have to inspect operational records and reports to project sales and decide on profitability. They are often called upon to monitor customer preferences to establish focus of sales efforts. They are expected to resolve customer complaints regarding sales and service. Finally, sales managers represent company at trade association meetings to promote products.

Every day, sales managers are expected to be able to listen to and understand others in meetings. They need to articulate ideas and problems.

It is important for sales managers to oversee regional and local sales managers and their staffs. They are often called upon to direct foreign sales and service outlets of an organization.
