In general, hotel or motel managers plan, direct, or coordinate activities of an organization or department that provides lodging and other accommodations.

Hotel or motel managers answer inquiries pertaining to hotel policies and services, and resolve occupants' complaints. They also inspect guest rooms and grounds for cleanliness and appearance. Equally important, hotel or motel managers have to train staff members. Finally, hotel or motel managers ready required paperwork pertaining to departmental functions.

Every day, hotel or motel managers are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for hotel or motel managers to design and implement policies and processes for the operation of a department or establishment. They are often called upon to participate in financial efforts such as the setting of room rates, the establishment of budgets, and the allocation of funds to departments. They also observe and monitor staff performance to insure efficient operations and adherence to facility's policies and procedures. They are sometimes expected to show or assign accommodations.
