In general, shipping receiving managers plan, direct, and coordinate the storage and distribution operations within an organization or the activities of organizations that are engaged in storing and distributing materials and products.

Shipping receiving managers supervise the efforts of staff working on receiving and shipping products or materials. They also interview and train warehouse and supervisory personnel. Equally important, shipping receiving managers have to design and document standard and emergency operating processes for receiving or salvaging products or materials. They are often called upon to respond to customers' or shippers' questions and complaints regarding storage and distribution services. They are expected to ready and oversee departmental budgets. Finally, shipping receiving managers manage storage facilities when required.

Every day, shipping receiving managers are expected to be able to listen to and understand others in meetings. They need to articulate ideas and problems.

It is important for shipping receiving managers to schedule and monitor air or surface pickup, delivery, or distribution of products or materials. They are often called upon to track and trace goods while they are en route to their destinations, expediting orders when needed. They also negotiate with carriers, warehouse operators and insurance company representatives for services and preferential rates. They are sometimes expected to examine products or materials to estimate quantities or weight and type of container required for storage or transport.
