In general, administrators plan, direct, or coordinate supportive services of an organization, such as recordkeeping, mail distribution, telephone operator/receptionist, and other office support services. They also may oversee facilities planning and maintenance and custodial operations.

Every day, administrators are expected to be able to read and understand documents and reports. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings. It is also important that they articulate ideas and problems.

It is important for administrators to analyze internal processes and recommend and implement procedural or policy changes to further optimize operations. They are often called upon to direct or schedule the supportive services department of a business or organization. They also acquire, distribute and store supplies. They are sometimes expected to set goals and deadlines for the department. Somewhat less frequently, administrators are also expected to oversee the maintenance and up keep machinery and electrical and mechanical systems.

Administrators sometimes are asked to conduct classes to teach procedures to staff. They also have to be able to hire and terminate clerical and administrative personnel and participate in architectural and engineering planning and layout, including space and installation management. And finally, they sometimes have to hire and terminate clerical and administrative personnel.
