They also plan, direct, or coordinate operational activities at the highest level of management with the help of subordinate executives and staff managers.

Chief executive officers talk with board members, organization officials, and staff members to consider issues and resolve problems. Equally important, chief executive officers have to direct human resources efforts, including the approval of human resource plans and efforts, the selection of directors and other high-level staff, and establishment and organization of major departments. They are expected to ready budgets for approval, including those for funding and implementation of programs. Finally, chief executive officers negotiate or approve contracts and agreements with suppliers, distributors, federal and state agencies, and other organizational entities.

Every day, chief executive officers are expected to be able to speak clearly. They need to think through problems and come up with general rules. It is also important that they piece together evidence to, in some sense, diagnose what is going on in a situation.
