In general, certified nursing aides provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. They also perform duties, such as feed, bathe, or move patients, or change linens.

Certified nursing aides answer patients' call signals. They also furnish patients with help walking and moving in and out of bed. Equally important, certified nursing aides have to observe patients' conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital signs, and report changes to professional staff. They are often called upon to turn and reposition bedridden patients, alone or with assistance, to inhibit bedsores. They are expected to clean rooms and change linens. Finally, certified nursing aides transport clients to treatment units, using a wheelchair or stretcher.

Every day, certified nursing aides are expected to be able to lift, push and move large and heavy objects. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings. It is also important that they see details at a very fine level of focus.

It is important for certified nursing aides to collect specimens such as urine or sputum. They are often called upon to deliver messages, documents and specimens. They also answer phones and direct visitors. They are sometimes expected to bathe or drape clients to ready them for surgery or examination.
