In general, employment coordinators interview job applicants and refer them to prospective employers for consideration. They also search application files, notify selected applicants of job openings, and refer qualified applicants to prospective employers.

Employment coordinators inform applicants of job openings and details such as duties and responsibilities and promotion opportunities. They also interview job applicants to match their qualifications with employers' needs, recording and evaluating applicant experience and skills. Equally important, employment coordinators have to inspect employment applications and job orders to match applicants with job requirements, using manual or computerized file searches. They are often called upon to decide on qualified applicants or refer them to employers, in line with organization policy. They are expected to maintain records of applicants not selected for employment. Finally, employment coordinators instruct job applicants in presenting a positive image by providing help with resume writing and interview techniques.

Every day, employment coordinators are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for employment coordinators to furnish background data on organizations with which interviews are scheduled. They are often called upon to evaluate selection and testing techniques by conducting research or follow-up efforts and conferring with management and supervisory personnel.
