In general, industrial production managers plan, direct, or coordinate the work activities and resources necessary for manufacturing products in accordance with cost, quality, and quantity specifications.

Industrial production managers inspect operations and talk with technical or administrative staff to deal with production or processing problems. They also inspect processing schedules and production orders to make decisions concerning inventory requirements and duty assignments, considering budgetary limitations and time constraints. Equally important, industrial production managers have to hire and discharge staff, and resolve personnel grievances. They are often called upon to direct and recommend processes for facility and equipment maintenance or modification, including the replacement of machines. Finally, industrial production managers direct and schedule the production, processing and marketing efforts of industrial organizations.

Every day, industrial production managers are expected to be able to think through problems and come up with general rules. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings. It is also important that they articulate ideas and problems.

It is important for industrial production managers to ready and maintain production reports and personnel records. They are often called upon to design and implement production tracking and quality control systems and other operational reports, to uncover production problems. They also set and monitor product standards, examining samples of raw products or directing testing during processing, to insure finished products are of prescribed quality. They are sometimes expected to institute employee suggestion or involvement programs. Somewhat less frequently, industrial production managers are also expected to ready and maintain production reports and personnel records.
