They also establish practice guidelines for specialty areas such as primary health care of women, care of the childbearing family, and newborn care. Equally important, nurse midwives have to explain procedures to patients, family members, staff members or others. They are often called upon to furnish patients with direct family planning services such as inserting intrauterine devices, dispensing oral contraceptives, and fitting cervical barriers including cervical caps or diaphragms. They are expected to educate patients and family members regarding prenatal or interconceptional care. Finally, nurse midwives formulate or evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, health care teams, or the community.

Every day, nurse midwives are expected to be able to evaluate problems as they arise. It is also important that they listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for nurse midwives to write data in medical records or furnish narrative summaries to communicate patient data to other health care providers. They are often called upon to conduct clinical research on topics such as maternal or infant health care and gynecological care. They also furnish prenatal or newborn care to patients. They are sometimes expected to furnish primary health care, including pregnancy and childbirth, to women. Somewhat less frequently, nurse midwives are also expected to formulate or evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, health care teams, or the community.

Nurse midwives sometimes are asked to read current literature, talk with colleagues, or participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in midwifery.
