Informatics nurse specialists design, implement or evaluate health data technology applications, tools, processes or structures to help nurses with data management. They also design or deliver training programs for health data technology, creating operating manuals as needed. Equally important, informatics nurse specialists have to analyze computer and data technologies to establish applicability to nursing practice, education, administration and research. They are often called upon to design or implement policies or practices to insure the privacy or security of patient data. They are expected to read current literature, talk with colleagues, and participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in informatics. Finally, informatics nurse specialists layout or furnish support to nursing informatics research.
