In general, registered nurses assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. They also administer nursing care to ill, injured, or disabled patients.

Registered nurses monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patients' conditions. They also record patients' medical data and vital signs. Equally important, registered nurses have to maintain accurate, detailed reports and records. They are often called upon to consult and direct with health care team members to gauge, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. They are expected to instruct individuals, families and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention and childbirth, and design health improvement programs. Finally, registered nurses ready patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments.

Every day, registered nurses are expected to be able to evaluate problems as they arise. They need to piece together evidence to, in some sense, diagnose what is going on in a situation. It is also important that they listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for registered nurses to ready rooms, sterile instruments, apparatus and supplies, and insure that stock of supplies is maintained. They are often called upon to order and evaluate diagnostic tests to pinpoint and assess patient's condition. They also assess the needs of individuals, families or communities, including assessment of individuals' home or work environments to pinpoint potential health or safety problems. They are sometimes expected to furnish health care, first aid, immunizations and assistance in convalescence and rehabilitation in locations such as schools and industry. Somewhat less frequently, registered nurses are also expected to engage in research efforts pertaining to nursing.

Registered nurses sometimes are asked to modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions. and perform administrative and managerial functions, such as taking responsibility for a unit's staff and long-range goals. And finally, they sometimes have to monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
