In general, route delivery drivers drive truck or other vehicle over established routes or within an established territory and sell goods, such as food products, including restaurant take-out items, or pick up and deliver items, such as laundry. They also may also take orders and collect payments.

Every day, route delivery drivers are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for route delivery drivers to listen to and resolve patrons' complaints regarding products or services. They are often called upon to collect money from patrons and record transactions on customer receipts. They also inform regular patrons of new products or services and price changes. They are sometimes expected to record sales or delivery data on daily sales or delivery record. Somewhat less frequently, route delivery drivers are also expected to record sales or delivery data on daily sales or delivery record.

Route delivery drivers sometimes are asked to maintain vehicles and food-dispensing equipment and clean inside of machines that dispense food or beverages. They also have to be able to drive vehicles to deliver such items as food or newspapers and inspect records of dealers or station drops and load vehicles. And finally, they sometimes have to arrange merchandise and sales promotion displays or issue sales promotion materials to clients.
