CAREER DESCRIPTION: Roofer
In general, roofers cover roofs of structures with shingles, slate, and related materials. They also may spray roofs, sidings, and walls with material to bind, seal, or soundproof sections of structures.
Roofers clear away snow or refuse from roofs before applying roofing materials. They also align roofing materials with edges of roofs. Equally important, roofers have to trim felt and strips of flashing; and fit them into angles formed by walls and intersecting roof surfaces. They are often called upon to cement or nail flashing-strips of metal or shingle over joints to make them watertight. They are expected to set up partially overlapping layers of material over roof insulation surfaces, determining distance of roofing material overlap using chalk lines, gauges on shingling hatchets, or lines on shingles. Finally, roofers inspect problem roofs to establish the best processes for repairing them.
Every day, roofers are expected to be able to maintain balance when in motion. It is also important that they control objects and devices with precise control.
It is important for roofers to set up vapor barriers and/or layers of insulation on the roof decks of flat roofs, and seal the seams. They are often called upon to cover exposed nailheads with roofing cement or caulking to inhibit water leakage and rust. They also set up or remove single-ply roofing systems, using waterproof sheet materials such as modified plastics or other asphaltic compositions. They are sometimes expected to cover roofs and exterior walls of structures with slate and/or related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers and other tools. Somewhat less frequently, roofers are also expected to glaze top layers to make a smooth finish, or embed gravel in the bitumen for rough surfaces.
Roofers sometimes are asked to apply plastic coatings and membranes or felt over sloped roofs before applying shingles. They also have to be able to prepare scaffolding to furnish safe access to roofs and clean and maintain equipment. And finally, they sometimes have to spray roofs and walls with material to bind or soundproof sections of structures, using spray guns and heaters.
Like many other jobs, roofers must be able to take change and lead and be thorough and dependable.
