Advertising managers talk with department heads or staff to consider topics such as contracts, selection of advertising media, or product to be advertised. They also read trade journals and professional literature to stay informed on trends and changes that affect media planning. Equally important, advertising managers have to gather and organize data to develop advertising campaigns. They are often called upon to formulate and ready advertising and promotional material to increase sales of products or services, working with customers, company officials, sales departments and advertising agencies. Finally, advertising managers ready and negotiate advertising and sales contracts.

Every day, advertising managers are expected to be able to think creatively about the ideas of others. They need to articulate ideas and problems. It is also important that they listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for advertising managers to inspect layouts and advertising copy and edit scripts, audio and video tapes, and other promotional material for adherence to given requirements. They are often called upon to identify and design contacts for promotional campaigns and industry programs that meet identified buyer targets such as dealers or consumers.
