In general, business administrators plan, direct, or coordinate the operations of companies or public and private sector organizations. They also duties and responsibilities include formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources, but are too diverse and general in nature to be classified in any one functional area of management or administration, such as personnel, purchasing, or administrative services.

Business administrators oversee staff, preparing work schedules and assigning specific duties. They also establish and implement departmental policies and procedures, conferring with board members, organization officials, and staff members as needed. Equally important, business administrators have to oversee efforts directly pertaining to making products or providing services. They are often called upon to decide on staffing requirements, and interview, hire and train new employees, or oversee those personnel processes. Finally, business administrators inspect financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to establish areas needing cost reduction and program improvement.

Every day, business administrators are expected to be able to listen to and understand others in meetings. They need to articulate ideas and problems.

It is important for business administrators to direct and schedule organization's financial and budget efforts to fund operations and increase efficiency. They are often called upon to formulate and direct efforts such as sales promotions, coordinating with other department heads as required. They also direct and schedule efforts of businesses or departments concerned with the production or distribution of products. They are sometimes expected to direct non-merchandising departments of businesses. Somewhat less frequently, business administrators are also expected to perform sales floor work such as greeting and assisting customers, stocking shelves, and taking inventory.

Business administrators sometimes are asked to design and implement product marketing strategies including advertising campaigns and sales promotions. They also have to be able to oversee the movement of goods into and out of production facilities And finally, they sometimes have to direct and schedule efforts of businesses or departments concerned with the production or distribution of products.
