They also loading equipment may include power shovels, hoisting engines equipped with cable-drawn scraper or scoop, or machines equipped with gathering arms and conveyor.

Every day, loading machine operators are expected to be able to maintain precise control of objects and devices through a range of movements. It is also important that they respond quickly in general.

It is important for loading machine operators to pry off loose material from roofs and move it into the paths of machines, using crowbars. They are often called upon to stop gathering arms when cars are full. They also drive machines into piles of material blasted from working faces. They are sometimes expected to make use of levers to move conveyor booms or shovels so that mine contents such as coal and ore can be placed into cars or onto conveyors.
