In general, sales team managers directly supervise and coordinate activities of sales workers other than retail sales workers. They also may perform duties, such as budgeting, accounting, and personnel work, in addition to supervisory duties.

Sales team managers furnish staff with assistance in performing difficult or complicated duties. They also hire and evaluate personnel. Equally important, sales team managers have to formulate and make ready work schedules, and assign employees to specific duties. They are often called upon to attend company meetings to share product data and direct work efforts with other departments. They are expected to talk with company officials to develop methods and procedures to increase sales and promote business. Finally, sales team managers listen to and resolve customer complaints regarding services or personnel.

Every day, sales team managers are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to listen to and understand others in meetings.

It is important for sales team managers to direct and supervise employees working on sales, inventory-taking, reconciling cash receipts, or performing specific services, such as pumping gasoline for clients. They are often called upon to make ready sales and inventory summaries for management and budget departments. They also direct sales promotion efforts. They are sometimes expected to analyze specifics of sales territories to gauge their growth potential and to set quotas. Somewhat less frequently, sales team managers are also expected to inventory stock and reorder when inventories drop to specified levels.

Sales team managers sometimes are asked to visit retailers and sales representatives to advance products and gather data. They also have to be able to examine product to insure correct pricing and display, and that it functions as advertised And finally, they sometimes have to examine products purchased for resale or received for storage to establish product condition.
