Bailiffs enforce courtroom rules of behavior and warn persons not to smoke or disturb court procedure. They also manage order in courtrooms during trials and guard juries from outside contact. Equally important, bailiffs have to announce the entrance of judges. They are often called upon to check courtrooms for security and cleanliness and assure availability of sundry supplies for use by judges. Finally, bailiffs stop people from entering courtrooms while judges charge juries.

Every day, bailiffs are expected to be able to articulate ideas and problems. They need to evaluate problems as they arise. It is also important that they focus attention on specific tasks without being distracted.

It is important for bailiffs to furnish jury escort to restaurant and other areas outside of courtroom to inhibit jury contact with public. They are often called upon to report need for police or medical assistance to sheriff's office. They also guard lodging of sequestered jury. They are sometimes expected to collect and retain unauthorized firearms from persons entering courtroom. Somewhat less frequently, bailiffs are also expected to announce the entrance of judges.
