A Master’s degree is for students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree. Master’s programs are in highly specialized fields and demonstrate expertise in one small area. These graduate programs usually take 1-2 years to complete, but can take much longer depending on the program.
A Master’s degree is earned by completing the courses required by the particular college or university. In the USA, the amount of required credits usually adds up to one or two years for graduate students who are enrolled full-time. Students who are enrolled part-time, or who are in programs with more rigorous requirements, may take longer to earn the degree.
Types of Masters Degrees
There are two primary kinds of Master’s degrees: a Master of Arts and a Master of Science. Some programs consist solely of classroom instruction, others consist solely of research, and others are a combination of the two. A Master’s degree is in between a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate. Depending on the field, some students receive a Master’s degree before entering a doctorate program while others enter doctorate programs directly after completing a bachelor’s degree.
