Law Enforcement Degrees, Schools and Training Programs

Law enforcement is a vital and necessary part of today’s society. To be successful in the field, professionals need proper training and skills. Law enforcement majors learn how to handle evidence, witnesses and other elements of a crime scene in order to determine who is responsible for a crime and bring that person to justice.

There are several jobs available for the graduate of a law enforcement program. Law enforcement majors may become police officers, private investigators, security officers or workers within the court system. Courses in police operations, law, criminal psychology, etc. help prepare law enforcement majors to become professionals in the criminal investigation process.

According to a 2004 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, police officers had a median yearly income of $46,180, private investigators earned $36,330, and security guards had an annual income of $22,070. The potential for job opportunities is expected to increase substantially in the future. From 2002 to 2012, jobs for police officers are expected to increase 24.7%, private detective positions are expected to increase 25.3%, and security guard positions are expected to increase 31.9%.
