  • A well thought out plan can make the difference between success and failure. The most successful career changers have a well-developed plan and strategy before attempting a career change.
  • Don’t let fear get in your way. Its normal to be bit scared about making a career change — most people who change careers feel a little bit insecure.
  • Don’t expect a career change to happen overnight. A career change is a major event. It requires a lot of planning, researching and preparation. Don’t get discouraged if your career change isn’t happening as fast as you wanted.
  • Don’t change careers simply because you’re disatisfied with your current job. There may be many reasons your not happy at your current job and a career change isn’t necessarily the best solution.
  • Make sure that your new career is centered around your passions. Don’t settle for a new career that isn’t fulfiling … or you may just end up changing careers again down the road.
  • Take advantage of transferable skills if you can. Any skills you can apply to your new career will help you make smooth transition.
  • Make sure to explore a variety of careers before making a final carer change decision. Identify and research all the careers that take advantage of both your skills and your passions. Don’t limit yourself to similar careers.
  • Get all the education and training you can to prepare you for your new career. However, make sure you research and identify the correct career training or education programs. Don’t sign up for a career education, certification or training program until you’re certain you know what you need.
  • Focus on networking. Networking is probably one of the biggest skills required for any successful job seeker. If you can learn to network successfully you’ll greatly increase your ability to find the perfect job and have a smooth career change transition.
  • Do everything you can to gain valuable experience in your new career field before you quit your current job. Find a temp position, volunteer, or find a part-time job in your new career field. Not only will gain experience but you’ll also gain confident and contacts.
  • Find a mentor. Making a career change can be very challanging. Having someone who is already in your new career field that can direct you, keep you focused and motivate you will make your career change transition much easier and enjoyable.
  • Make sure to be flexible. A career change is in many regards like starting all over. You probably won’t be as qualified or have as much relevant experience as other professionals in your new career field. You may be lacking important skills and knowledge. You’ll have to make concessions about job titles, salary, relocation, etc.
